Ganglion Cysts & Hand Masses

Female hand with a hygroma

Our orthopedic, neurosurgery, and spine specialists at MD West ONE can provide advanced treatment options for ganglion cysts and hand masses. These two common conditions cause hand pain, discomfort, and swelling and can appear, disappear, and change size over time. While most hand masses do not require treatment, our team has several options to help you find long-lasting relief.

Understanding Ganglion Cysts and Hand Masses

Ganglion cysts and hand masses are lumps or bumps that form along the hand or wrist. Ganglion cysts are noncancerous fluid-filled sacs that form on the tendons and joints throughout the hand or wrist. Hand masses, on the other hand, can be caused by various conditions, including infections, inflammation, or tumors.

Both ganglion cysts and hand masses arise out of the joint and grow out of the tissues surrounding the joint, such as the ligaments, tendons, and joint linings. They can vary in size and shape and grow larger with increased activity. While it’s not known what can trigger these growths, it’s essential to seek medical attention if you have the following symptoms:

  • A small, firm bump on your hand or wrist
  • Pain or discomfort around the bump
  • Swelling or tenderness around the bump
  • Decreased range of motion in your hand or wrist

Our experienced team of specialists can perform a comprehensive evaluation to diagnose the type and severity of the hand mass and develop a personalized treatment plan. At MD West ONE, we offer various treatment options for ganglion cysts and hand masses, which include:

  • Monitoring and Observation: If you don’t experience any pain or other symptoms, we recommend monitoring the mass to ensure no unusual changes occur.
  • Conservative Treatment: If the mass or cyst is causing pain and discomfort, we can perform conservative treatments to either immobilize it or drain the mass of any leftover fluids.
    • Immobilization often works to decrease the size of the mass over time with a brace or splint.
    • Aspiration, or fluid drainage, removes the cyst’s fluids with a needle. However, ganglion cysts often come back due to the root connection with the joint or tendon sheath.
  • Surgical Intervention: In cases where conservative measures cannot relieve your pain or discomfort or the mass is too large, our team can offer surgical treatments to remove the mass.

Our team of specialists possesses the expertise and skill to perform various treatments, from conservative care to complex surgical interventions. We collaborate using a multi-disciplinary approach to provide comprehensive care for all aspects of your condition.
