Rotator Cuff

If you tear the rotator cuff, you can experience intense pain, lack of mobility, and instability throughout your shoulder. When conservative treatments fail to relieve your symptoms, our team of experts can provide long-term relief from shoulder pain with rotator cuff repair surgery.

Understanding Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint, providing stability and movement. These injuries can occur due to acute trauma, repetitive motions, and changes in the tendons resulting from degenerative diseases. Rotator cuff injuries can cause pain, poor range of motion, weakness, and difficulties performing daily activities.

Shoulder injuries are especially common to athletes and construction workers that use their rotator cuff during repetitive motions and shoulder use. Strains, tears, and inflammation throughout the shoulder are common with a rotator cuff injury. In most cases, rotator cuffs can heal through conservative methods such as rest, anti-inflammatory medications, strengthening exercises, and steroid injections.

AT MD West ONE, we may recommend rotator cuff repair if you experience any of the following:

  • Severe Symptoms: If conservative treatments such as rest, physical therapy, and medication have not provided sufficient relief, rotator cuff surgery may be necessary.
  • Tendon Tear: If you have a partial or complete tear along the rotator cuff tendons, surgery may be required to reattach and repair the damaged tissues.
  • Functional Limitations: If a rotator cuff injury significantly affects your ability to perform work-related tasks, sports activities, or daily living activities, surgery may be the best option to restore function.
  • Symptoms Longer Than 6 Months: Surgery may also be a good option if you’ve experienced significant weakness and function loss in your shoulder between 6 to 12 months.
  •

Our skilled surgeons and specialists at MD West ONE can perform rotator cuff repair surgery using advanced techniques to ensure the best outcomes. Our surgical process goes as follows:

  • Anesthesia: During a rotator cuff repair surgery, general anesthesia is used to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery.
  • Arthroscopy: During the first step of your treatment, our surgeons will work with minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques to visualize and access the damaged rotator cuff tendons.
  • Tendon Repair: Once the surgeon has access to the rotator cuff, your surgeon will carefully reattach the torn tendon(s) to the bone using small anchors or sutures, then close the incision with sutures, staples, and cover the incision with a sterile dressing.

After your rotator cuff repair, our team will provide post-operative care to help support your recovery, providing immobilizers, pain management plans, physical therapy, and follow-up appointments to monitor and adjust treatments for your recovery.
